Lakefield Homecoming 2022 celebration aims to bring ‘past and present together’

-

Lakefield Homecoming 2022, a celebration of all things Lakefield, will run from Aug. 5 to Aug. 7.

The first-ever weekend-long event, organized by a volunteer planning committee made up of five Lakefield area residents, features a jammed-packed lineup of festivities supported by several community partners, including the Lakefield Legion, Lakefield Village Lions Club and Lakefield & District Lions Club.

“It’s a celebration of the Village of Lakefield to bring the past and present together,” said committee member Stacey Sullivan.

“All are welcome to join. We’re hoping to see a lot of past and current residents of the village come out and enjoy the festivities,” added Sullivan.

Lakefield Homecoming was originally planned for 2020, but the pandemic forced organizers to pull the plug on the festivities.

Lakefield Homecoming 2022 will commence on Aug. 5 with a welcoming reception at the Lakefield Legion beginning at 5 p.m. The kickoff event will feature BBQ grub and live entertainment from Bob Taylor Band.

A village merchants’ sidewalk sale on Queen Street, beginning at 9 a.m. and featuring a variety of local businesses, will lead off a long list of events on Aug. 6.

The sale will be followed by a golf tournament at Katchiwano Golf & Country Club, starting at 10 a.m. The tournament, geared toward participants of all ages and skill levels, includes 18 holes and a light lunch. Pre-registration — $65 per player — is required. Proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Community Care Lakefield and the Lakefield Historical Society. Players can register at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MFFZTCR.

At 11 a.m., a memorial stone and bench will be installed at Hague Point, near Lakefield Beach, to honour Moses and Nellie Marsden and the Michi Saagig people.

Next, the Lakefield Legion Party on the Patio & BBQ will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Harley Payne and The Original General Delivery Band will perform.

The Lakefield Village Lions Club Homecoming Dance gets into swing at the Lakefield Arena at 8 p.m. Peterborough-based band Gravy will perform a mix of classic rock, blues and southern tunes. An admittance fee of $25 is required. Guests looking to purchase tickets ahead of time are asked to contact Lakefield Village Lions Club at 705-652-0639.

On the final day of festivities — Aug. 7 — a classic car show, sponsored by the Lakefield & District Lions Club, will be held at Isabel Morris Park from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with live music from John Boyko.
