Lance Stroll to miss Singapore Grand Prix after huge qualifying crash

After having been involved in a huge accident during qualifying on Saturday evening, Lance Stroll has decided that he will not participate at today’s Singapore Grand Prix.

The Canadian found himself in the drop zone in the dying stages of the qualifying segment and was unable to set encouraging times in the first two sectors on his final push lap. Trying to make up time in the last sector of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Stroll pushed hard coming into the penultimate corner which saw his car run over the kerbs.

The aggressive approach to Turn 18 meant that he lost control of the rear of his car and crashed into the barriers. Stroll was able to get out of the car unaided and he was later passed fit by the medical team, but he still felt sore on Sunday morning.

On Sunday afternoon, hours before the Grand Prix was set to kick off, Aston Martin released a statement: “Following Lance’s crash in qualifying during the Singapore Grand Prix, Lance and Aston Martin have jointly agreed that he will not participate in the Singapore Grand Prix this evening.

“The team face a huge job repairing the car today and understandably Lance is still sore following such a high impact. Lance’s focus now shifts to fully recovering ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix.”

Commenting on the decision, Aston Martin Team Principal Mike Krack said: “The whole team are relieved that Lance was able to step out of the car after yesterday’s accident – however, he is still feeling the after-effects of such a high-impact crash.

“Our priority now is that he makes a full and speedy recovery. Together, we have decided that he will sit out this evening’s race and instead focus fully on returning to the cockpit for next weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.”
