Toyota Can’t Keep Up With Classic 70 Series Land Cruiser Demand, Pauses Orders In Australia

-

Demand for the 70 Series Toyota Land Cruiser is so strong in Australia that the car manufacturer is not taking any more orders.

While the 70 Series has been around since 1984, it remains extremely popular Down Under thanks to its ruggedness and relative simplicity compared to modern-day SUVs. However, demand for the off-roader, as well as production issues, have prompted Toyota Australia to stop accepting new orders.

“Available supply is being impacted by ongoing production disruptions being experienced by the global automotive industry,” the automaker recently confirmed. “At the same time, the model’s popularity among Australian customers remains at historical highs.”

Toyota builds the LandCruiser 70 in Japan and it is thought to be one of the worst-affected vehicles amid the ongoing semiconductor shortages that continue to plague the industry.

“The Toyota team has been working diligently to deliver a record number of vehicles with extraordinary support from our parent company,” added Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations Sean Hanley. “At the same time, strong demand and industry-wide supply challenges globally mean we simply cannot fulfill orders more quickly. Therefore, we have decided to pause new customer orders for the Land Cruiser 70 Series. Dealers will be in direct contact with customers about wait times for individual existing orders over the coming months.”

The Land Cruiser 70 remains so popular in Australia that just a few months ago, Toyota announced a series of upgrades to it, including the fitment of autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. Toyota has also increased the vehicle’s payload figure. In 2021, approximately 13,900 Land Cruiser 70 models were sold across the country.

It is uncertain how long those with a Land Cruiser 70 order will have to wait. However, at least one dealership recently told CarExpert that wait times had grown to three to four years. Toyota refuted that claim.
